Vaccinations and Immunizations
Depending on the location of your beach wedding you will need to make sure that you have all the right jabs so that you are protected while you are away. Vaccination against yellow fever is actually compulsory in some African and South American countries.
Malaria protection is also required for a great deal of tropical locations such as the Indian Ocean and Asia as well as Africa and South America. Even with something like Malaria, the protection that you will need will vary from location to location and requirements for certain countries are also liable to change at different times, so it’s best to make an appointment at a travel clinic or see your doctor no later than three months before you set off. Taking vitamin B supplements is also a good mosquito repellent, but this should not be your only form of protection.
Also make sure that you check how long beforehand you need the treatment. Sometimes you will only need one injection, while at other times you will need a course of treatments.
Preparing to Fly
It’s important to make your flight as healthy and safe as possible, especially on long-haul flights.
Make sure that you keep on the move as much as possible during your flight. Stretch your legs as much as your can and move about as much as you can to keep your circulation flowing. You will often find that airlines provide you with a card showing exercises that can be done whilst you are in your seat and these will help prevent cramps and stiffness as well as improving your circulation.
Wear comfortable loose clothing on the journey and sit with your legs uncrossed.
Keep your body hydrated by drinking lots of water throughout the flight and limit the amount of alcohol that you drink.
Fun in The Sun
Sunshine feels marvelous on our skin and releases feel-good chemicals into our bodies, but it’s all in the dosage. The last thing you want from your holiday of a lifetime is to have to stay inside for the whole time because you got burnt when you first got there. And a honeymoon where your skin is so sore you can’t bear any touch is definitely not ideal.
Make sure you pack your high SPF sun-tan cream and build up the time that you spend in the sun gradually. Keep covered up with some sexy loose, flowing clothing like a kaftan to protect your skin and wear a fun summer hat to protect your head.
Keep The Bugs at Bay
As already mentioned, vitamin B supplements make a good mosquito repellent, but you’ll want to pack some some good insect repellent and some antiseptic cream in case the little mites do manage to feast on you. If you know that you have a strong reaction to insect bites then you could see your doctor about a course of antihistamine tablets before you go.
Prevention is obviously better than cure though, so keep covered up in areas where there are flying insects like mosquitoes. You may not think that it’s the sexiest apparel for your tropical honeymoon, but long pants, long sleeved shirts and socks could save you from being a feast for the insects if you’re staying in a hot, humid location.
Night-time is when most of the bugs come out to play, so be extra careful at night. Between dusk and dawn, keep covered when you’re out and apply insect repellent frequently.
When you go to bed make sure that you sleep under a mosquito net or sleep in an air-conditioned room that’s too cold for the little fellas to dine out on you. In the morning make sure that you give all your clothes a good shake before you put them on in case anything’s been lurking in there overnight. (This last nugget comes from personal experience – Even though I covered up completely for a fabulous African safari I still managed to get a nasty spider bite because I forgot to shake my socks before I put them on.)
Do what you can to make sure you don’t become a meal for the bugs, but take a well-stocked first aid kit with you to minimize the effects if you do get a bite.
Food Safety
Part of the joy of an exotic holiday is trying all the tempting and exciting foods that are on offer. It’s wonderful to sip enticing cocktails and taste mouthwatering tropical fruits, but you need to exercise a little bit of caution. Different areas have different standards of hygiene and native bugs that the locals are immune to, but will have you running to the bathroom, so be careful. Be particularly aware of unwashed fruit and vegetables, drinking water (including the ice cubes in your drinks) and also things like shellfish. Where you can, drink bottles water and wash the gorgeous tropical fruit you bought at the market before you eat it.
Pack diarrhea tablets in your first-aid kit in case you need them and keep drinking bottled water as much as you can. If diarrhea or vomiting is severe then you will need to get medical attention as there is a danger of dehydration. If you do develop vomiting or diarrhea then the effectiveness of any contraceptive pill is dramatically reduced, so unless you are looking for a surprise souvenir of your trip, it’s wise to pack some condoms too.
These beach wedding safety precautions are not meant to scare you or keep you from venturing out for the duration of your trip, but the more aware of the perils that you could possibly face, the more you can prepare and be able to avoid them. Your beach theme wedding should be the holiday of a lifetime and if you take some sensible beach wedding precautions you will be able to enjoy each magical moment to the full.
